The new Empowerment Through Insight resource, developed in partnership with the Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ) and the Women’s Ethnic Network (WEN), is designed to equip multicultural women leaders with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to support women in their communities.
Women from different cultural backgrounds face additional challenges when experiencing domestic and family violence (DFV). Cultural expectations, language barriers, and systemic inequities can prevent women from accessing the help they need. This resource addresses these barriers by offering practical strategies and tools tailored to the unique needs of these women.
Insight for action: How the Empowerment Through Insight resource equips leaders
The Empowerment Through Insight resource draws on the outcomes of two significant workshops held by WEN in 2024:
Training leaders to engage in safe, informed conversations with women experiencing DFV.
Connecting community leaders with service providers to discuss recognising and responding to DFV and coercive control.
The result is a practical guide that helps leaders:
understand the complexities of DFV and coercive control
facilitate safe, culturally appropriate discussions
build confidence in offering support and connecting women with relevant services.
This resource brings together a wealth of knowledge, informed by experts and community leaders, along with activities and insights shared by service providers. It offers accessible tools for addressing DFV, while recognising the additional barriers faced by women from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Challenge DV’s role
Challenge DV is proud to have contributed to the resource through service mapping and providing guidance on supporting women from diverse backgrounds. Special mention to our Workplace Programs Manager, Juliana Mantilla, whose expertise played a key role in shaping this resource. Together with ECCQ and WEN, we’re honoured to make practical resources more accessible to leaders who work with CALD women.
