Why safe, inclusive environments matter in addressing DFV

Creating safe and inclusive environments is essential in addressing domestic and family violence (DFV). These spaces – whether in workplaces, schools, sports clubs, or community groups – can be a crucial support system for individuals affected by violence. For many, they are among the few environments that provide a temporary break from the abuse.

Studies have shown that DFV significantly impacts Australian workplaces, affecting employee wellbeing and organisational productivity (Our Watch, 2021). Approximately two-thirds of women experiencing DFV in Australia are employed (Our Watch, 2021). While specific data for schools and community groups is limited, workplaces serve as a clear indicator of how DFV permeates our broader community spaces, highlighting the critical need for supportive policies and expert training to address these issues effectively.

All of us, together

Fostering safe and inclusive spaces requires a unified effort. Government legislation lays the foundation for systemic change, but impact also comes from grassroots action. Workplaces, schools, and community programs play an integral role in shaping cultures of respect and equality. At home and in our social circles, we can each make a difference by recognising the signs and drivers of DFV, and challenging harmful behaviours.

Challenge DV is proud to be a leader in this collective effort, providing tailored education, training, policies, and programs that empower groups and individuals to take action. Whether through workplace policies, in-school initiatives, or sports club programs, our mission is to create environments where everyone can thrive, and abuse of any form is not tolerated.

Building safer communities for all

Each of us can play a part in making our spaces safer and more inclusive. Here are some practical ways to create change:

  1. Learn about the key drivers of DFV: Understand how they impact individuals and communities, particularly those at increased risk due to intersecting factors such as gender, ethnicity, and disability. Challenge DV’s programs equip workplaces, schools, and community groups with the knowledge and tools needed to address these issues effectively.

  2. Make a difference through policy: Advocate for government legislation and organisational policies that protect and support those affected by DFV.

  3. Challenge harmful behaviours: Speak up when you witness disrespectful or abusive actions, whether in public, at work, or in your social circles.

  4. Treat others as you want to be treated: Foster empathy, kindness, and inclusivity in your interactions with others. Lead by example.

  5. Be there for those in need: Offer a listening ear and an open mind. Let someone experiencing violence know you’re there to support them.

  6. Learn about support services: Familiarise yourself with resources and organisations in your community so you can guide someone experiencing DFV to the help they need.

  7. Support causes and advocacy groups: Engage with organisations like Challenge DV and our partner Beyond DV, who work to prevent violence and support survivors.

How Challenge DV can help

Challenge DV offers a wide range of programs and services, each tailored to meet the specific needs of organisations and individuals, equipping them with the tools to foster safe environments. These include:

  • Workplace training: Developing respectful workplace cultures and implementing policies that support employees affected by DFV.

  • School programs: Educating young people about respectful relationships and providing the skills to recognise and challenge harmful behaviours.

  • Sports and community initiatives: Promoting inclusivity and respect in local clubs and groups, ensuring these spaces remain safe havens.

When we each contribute to making our communities safer, a groundswell builds that helps shift the culture at large. Together, we create a powerful movement that says no to violence and yes to safety and respect for all.

Why it matters

Workplaces, schools, sports clubs, and community groups should be places where everyone feels safe. For people experiencing violence at home, these environments often provide their only reprieve. Strengthening these spaces and ensuring they are inclusive and supportive can be life-changing, and even life-saving.

Together, we can make a difference. Through education, collective action, and a commitment to standing up against violence, we can create a future where everyone feels safe, respected, and included.
